Using
Your Worm Castings
Worm castings are abundant and environmentally
friendly.
Worm castings are one of nature’s best
fertilizers. They help perennials, potted
plants, lawn grass, and
vegetables grow strong root fibers and get
plenty of oxygen by aerating the soil. Worm
castings are
abundant and environmentally friendly.
You can research worm castings on the Internet.
They offer an inexpensive alternative to
chemical
fertilizers and are safe for all gardens. If
you're an organic gardener, you know that
everything you use in your garden ecosystem
should be natural. Earthworms, along with all
the other animals, have been
enriching the earth with nutrients from the
beginning. For about a dollar, you can buy a
pound of worm
castings to scatter over your garden.
Fertilize your garden with worm castings before
you plant. For annual flowers, use about half a
cup of
castings for each plant. For potted plants, pour
a couple of inches on the top then mix it in
with the rest of the soil. Repeat this process
every few months. Water your plants immediately
after adding worm
castings.
For your lawn, use about 10 pounds of worm
castings per 100 square feet. Mix it into the
soil for best
results. Add worm castings to your compost at
intervals in layers. This allows the high
concentrations of nitrogen, magnesium, and
phosphorous present in worm castings to spread
equally throughout your
compost and subsequently in your garden soil to
promote the growth of lush, vibrant plants.
When you go to buy worm castings, be sure to
read the label on any product. Some products
contain
all-natural animal castings and biodegradable
compounds, but others don’t. If you have any
question about the contents, be sure to ask the
gardening store clerk before purchasing the
product.
