Creating a Water-Conserving Garden
Gardening where there is little rain or water
can be challenging. You must learn how to make
the most of whatever water or rainfall you have.
You have to find ways to minimize water loss
from your garden and maximize use of the water
you have.
The first step in maximizing water use is to
invest in a good water hose. Check your water
hose regularly and make sure that the washers
are properly installed. Cheap hoses generally do
not last long and spring leaks, especially if
left out in the hot sun. They’re difficult to
coil and store and tend to kink, making them
extremely inefficient to use. A reasonably
priced rubber hose will last much longer than a
vinyl hose. You’ll find a variety of garden
hoses at stores that sell garden home tools.
If you don't have time to water by hand or you
have a bigger budget, you could install a
soaker-hose irrigation system. With the right
tools, this is a simple weekend project. This
irrigation system can save you a lot of time and
water. The holes in the hoses can be turned
directly on the base of the plants where the
water can be used most efficiently. This reduces
the amount of water lost to evaporation and
runoff. You would still need to check your
system regularly for large holes or damage that
could waste water.
To further maximize water usage, choose the best
time of day to water. Watering at night can lead
to mildew and the growth of fungi, which can
potentially infect your plants. Watering in the
heat of day results in much water being lost
through evaporation. The best time to water your
garden is during the early morning hours.
Mulch helps the soil retain moisture and heat.
Adding mulch insulates the soil and improves its
quality. Mulch eventually decomposes and
enriches the organic content of the soil,
increasing its ability to support healthier
plants. A garden with mulch requires less
watering. You can further improve the soil by
adding minerals and soil additives. Test your
soil, or have it tested, so you can add to it
what it lacks. Increasing the organic content of
your soil allows it to retain water longer.
Having the right garden tools for the job is
essential for efficiency.
You can set up rainwater collection systems in
your backyard or wherever convenient and use
this water for your planters and pots. You can
attach hoses to your water collection system and
have a soaker hose water irrigation system set
up to use the rainwater.
Another way to ensure the best water
conservation is to choose plants that are
suitable for your climate. Study your local
weather and know your gardening zones well.
Plants from outside your gardening zone may
require excessive watering. However, if you
choose plants that can adapt to a drier
environment and do not require frequent
watering, your plants will thrive.
Treat water as a valuable commodity and use your
imagination. With the right tools, you can have
a lush, beautiful garden even in areas that
experience drought and have to ration water in
the summer months.
