The United
States Department of Agriculture (USDA) has
established standards that growers must meet in
order to label any product “organic.” Many small
gardeners and farmers who don’t have the
resources to comply with these standards or the
time to do the extensive paperwork simply label
their products as “naturally grown” or “chemical
free.” Some farmers claim to use growing methods
that are superior to those required by the USDA.
The UK-based HDRA developed a voluntary charter
for organic gardeners. Commercial growers,
however, have to comply with the strict
standards of the Soil Association in order to
achieve certification as organic growers.
