Some organic gardening enthusiasts believe
that the use of pesticides conflicts with the
principle of
maintaining a harmonious ecosystem. Eliminating
all insects could throw the delicate system out
of
balance. They advocate introducing natural
predators such as birds and frogs into the
garden to take care of the bugs.
If, however, you choose to use pesticides in
your organic garden, you’ll want to use
pesticides that are
completely natural, without any synthetics or
chemicals. While some inorganic pesticides are
safe enough to eat, they can still damage the
ecosystem if allowed to run off. Organic
pesticides are best.
You can choose from among various organic
pesticide sprays on the market. Most of them can
be used in hydroponics gardens as well as in
outdoor gardens. Natural pesticides work by
interfering with the bugs’ digestion but don’t
kill or permanently harm them.
Another option is to use row covers, plant
collars, netting, and other barriers to protect
your plants and
crops from insects.
But before using pesticides or plant covers or
buying a truckload of frogs and bird feeders,
take time to watch the interaction of the plants
and insects in your garden. What is really going
on? Are the insects really devouring your crops
or are they just taking a few nibbles? Most
plants have evolved with the ability to survive
a little nibbling. Are the insects actually
harming your plants as you fear, or are they
just using them temporarily like good campers?
Could some of them even be interacting
beneficially with your plants? Plants and
insects have grown up together over millions of
years of evolution. Before panicking when you
see insects on your plants, take time to really
observe them.
It’s usually obvious if you have a real problem
with a predator. If the ecosystem in your garden
is out of balance because of an excess of one or
more species of insects, you might consider
restoring balance by applying one of the pest
control methods mentioned above, whether an
organic pesticide spray, protective barriers, or
natural predators. The ecosystem of a garden can
be thrown out of balance by atypical weather
(nature herself) and the migration of insects
not native to your area. Used wisely, natural
pesticides can help uphold the principle tenet
of organic gardening by promoting harmony.
