Permaculture is a design system that seeks to
follow nature’s patterns in order to create
sustainable
human habitats. The word originally comes from
the term “permanent agriculture,” which refers
to the idea that agriculture can be sustained
indefinitely in a specific location. Today the
meaning also includes
“permanent culture” to recognize the social
aspect of sustainability.
Today permaculture is primarily a land use and
community building movement integrating ecology,
architecture, landscaping, organic gardening,
and agro forestry to create a rich and
sustainable lifestyle.
Permaculture focuses on the whole rather than on
individual elements and on the relationships
that evolve among the elements according to the
way they are placed in the landscape. The whole
becomes greater than the sum of the parts.
Permaculture is about carefully observing nature
and natural systems,
recognizing universal principles and patterns,
and learning to apply them to individual
circumstances.
