The
Advantages of Hydroponics
There are six basic types of hydroponics
gardening systems, but they all require a
growing medium where plants can sprout their
roots.
Hydroponics gardening is also called
soil-less gardening. It may not appeal to people
with green thumbs who love to work the earth,
but it offers many advantages. For one thing,
you can raise a bountiful crop without dirt any
time of the year!
There are six basic types of hydroponics
gardening systems, but they all require a
growing medium where plants can sprout their
roots. Rockwool, derived from basaltic rock, is
the most popular growing medium. It comes in
cubes and strips. Stonewool is a substrate of
rockwool. Hydroton is a growing medium composed
of clay amalgam pellets. Vermiculite and perlite
are also used in hydroponics systems as growing
media.
Seeds are planted in the growing medium and
nourished with a nutrient-rich solution until
they are strong enough to be transferred to the
soil or, sometimes, to a larger cube of
rockwool.
One of the benefits of soil-less gardening is
its cleanliness. The lack of soil eliminates
those microorganisms present in soil that can
cause diseases in plants. It also eliminates the
toil of weeding!
Insects and other predators plague the
traditional outdoor garden. Sometimes this
requires the use of
pesticides, netting, row covers, and other
protective barriers. In a hydroponics garden,
the insects largely vanish. So do the gophers.
Hydroponics gardening is a great way to save
water. Very little water is wasted and most
nutrient solution is recycled.
Soil-less gardening also eliminates all the
variables associated with gardening outdoors. It
doesn’t matter what time of the year it is, or
what the weather is like. High winds, hail,
heavy rains or drought, and unseasonable
temperatures won’t affect the yield of a
hydroponics garden.
It is also possible to control the nutrient
balance in a hydroponics garden with precision.
The optimum diet for a specific crop can be
carefully determined, mixed, and delivered. As a
result, hydroponics systems often yield crops
with a moderately higher nutritional value than
those grown outdoors. Fruits and vegetables are
frequently fuller and more vividly colored.
A hydroponics system using rockwool can provide
better crop spacing than a traditional garden.
The cubes come pre-spaced. As a result, the
alignment of your plants may be more pleasing
visually. Buds and fruits may be more rich in
color and fuller.
Hydroponics gardening has become increasingly
popular among both commercial growers and garden
enthusiasts, but there are still many myths and
misconceptions about soil-less gardening. The
truth is that it is easy, affordable, and
ecologically sound. Hydroponics makes it
possible to grow a beautiful garden any time,
anywhere, regardless of climate or outside
conditions. The yield tends to be stronger, too,
compared to outdoor gardening, perhaps because
the plants can be nourished with great
precision.
