High-pressure sodium (HPS) lamps are best
used when color rendering is not of great
importance. They are a good alternative to metal
halide lamps but have a lower color-rendering
index (CRI) rating. HPS comprises a compact grow
light system with high lumens, and is an often
recommended as a
high-intensity discharge (HID) option.
The color temperature you need depends mainly on
the type of crops you're growing. For most
plants,
however, high-CRI and low-CRI systems make no
observable difference. On a scale of 1-100, 100
represents artificial light that is identical
qualitatively to natural sunlight.
HPS systems can produce a high-powered beam, but
the light must be managed efficiently. Many HID
lights take several minutes to warm up and in
the process waste power, which can be expensive
as well as dangerous. Some HPS lights have
occupancy sensors that dim the output
automatically when unattended, reducing the
output to a fraction of their capacity.
Hydrofarm makes one of the most widely used HPS
systems on the market. These HPS lamps are
quieter than most compact systems and have good
ventilation to keep them cool. Their rugged
steel design ensures durability. The well-built
transformer mounting and housing unit are
designed to withstand plenty of bumps.
